Additional information:

  • Author : Golletz, Lynda

This package includes a card representing all provinces and territories.

The following games can be placed with the cards:

20 Question Game: Attach a map card to the clothing at the back of each student.

Encourage students to use direction words and other map terms such as “border” or

“Canadian Shield” when asking their questions. Example: Is this city in the region called the Canadian Shield?

Province/Territory Scramble: Each student has a card. The teacher points to locations in the room and states categories for these (see ideas below). Students “scramble” to any location their province/territory card fits. Check accuracy by having students at each location call out their province/territory.

Concentration-style Game (matching): Make two sets of cards. Hint! On the second set of cards, use a dark, thick marker to print the names of the capital cities. Play the game as a class or in pairs.

Clue Game: Students write in phrases 3 or 4 clues for the province/territory card. One clue is incorrect. Individual students read aloud their clues to the class. The other students will guess the name of the province/territory and the incorrect clue.

The writer of the clues will say “Yes!” and show their card when the correct guess is made. Example: - borders the USA; has lots of great, flat farmland; the capital city is St. John’s.

The incorrect phrase is the capital city of St. John’s and the correct answer is Saskatchewan.
