Aims of this teachers guide:
To Kill A Mockingbird is one of the most successful novels taught in secondary school. Many students look back over the literature they have studied and remember it fondly. The novel is so well written that it almost teaches itself. However, students do need background material to understand not only the novel itself but also its significance during the time it was written.

This unit attempts to provide some of that background material in addition to activities which encourage students to think, read and write. Included are materials on the Civil Rights Movement in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s, an analysis of the major elements of the novel, activities to encourage students to think and to write clearly, quizzes, and suggestions for further reading and writing. Finally, the unit presents a comparison of the novel and the extremely successful 1962 movie of To Kill A Mockingbird.

Although the novel may be taught successfully to bright or eager students at the grades 7 and 8 levels, it is probably more appropriate in the first few years of secondary school.
Novel by Harper Lee.
