Students are expected to be able to choose an appropriate method of representation and explain why one graph is better than another in certain situations. Students learn line plots and stem and leaf plots as extensions of the simple tally chart. More difficult questions using mean, median, and mode are introduced.
Students will analyze and create pictographs, line plots, stem and leaf plots, circle graphs, broken line graphs, and bar graphs. Students will continue to develop their abilities to conduct surveys on given topics. A culminating activity is provided that utilizes their abilities to record data, represent the data in various ways, and compare the representations.
Probability:
Students will increase their vocabulary to include the words impossible, unlikely, likely, very likely, and certain. They will perform activities using cards, dice, money, grab bags, and spinners as well as real-life situations.
Students will be introduced to predictions with spinners and will determine all possible outcomes in a given situation.
Students will also examine the likelihood of winning the lottery. They will be asked to design a game based on their knowledge of probability.
