Students will read about Josiah Henson and his life in Canada in the 1830s. They will learn how his biography was used to write "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and the influence this book had to stop slavery. Josiah Henson was the first Black person to be on a Canadian postage stamp.
This lesson includes teacher information on the reasons Canadians celebrate Black History in February, teaching suggestions and ideas for guest speakers, and related websites. A Canadian Black History Timeline includes significant events from 1606 to 2002.
The two-page activity builds comprehension skills and serves as a springboard for dialogue.
