Your students will be thrilled with this hands-on, experimental approach to learning about the Canadian government and how elections are held. Everything you need to run a complete election is included to ensure your students experience the excitement and hard work of an election firsthand.

All students, no matter what their skill set, will have an active role in creating parties, choosing leaders, and other important personnel including campaign managers, creative directors, accountants, etc. Then the fun begins as the classroom is turned into an election campaign with posters, commercials, and debates.

Students will gain a personal understanding of the meaning of citizenship, and will even have the opportunity to apply democracy to decisions in their own school.

This resource teaches elections and citizenship through experiential learning. The more involved the students become in the activities, the better their understanding of how these processes work in Canada.

The approach provides numerous ways to assess students on a variety of skills including reading and writing, knowledge of the Canadian Government unit, applying math, critical thinking, oral communication, and interpersonal skills. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on paper, orally, and through actions. They also have a chance to make many of their own choices thereby increasing accountability.

Students are given the chance to form their own opinion about many issues that face our country today and to discover ways that they can be a part of the process.
