AIM

The aim of this unit is to develop the students' understanding of the stock market and the world of business. The unit will motivate the students and provide an avenue for developing and applying mathematical skills ( whole numbers, integers, algebraic expressions, fractions and decimals), writing skills, art skills, computer skills and dramatic expression. The computer is used to aid in the presentation of a portfolio and marketing pamphlet, as well as develop skills using spreadsheets and graphing functions.

OVERVIEW

First, students are divided into groups of four to five. Each group is theoretically given $100 000 with which they are to invest in five stocks. One day per week is set aside as a trading day.
On this day students will decide on whether to buy new stocks or to hold on to an existing stock.
The group with the most money after liquidation at the end of the unit was designated the most successful firm.
Each group has three major assignments. Each member of the group is to submit a bar graph, pie graph and line graph at the end of each week. One student from each group is responsible for updating their groups spreadsheet on the computer.

Second, each group represents an investment firm. They are to submit a portfolio explaining why people should invest through their investment firm. The portfolio represents the bulk of the unit.

Third, all groups are responsible for inventing a new product for consumer use. They are to submit a pamphlet which outlines the benefits of the product. To market this product the group also must make a class presentation, as well as produce a one minute commercial to sell their product.

Other tasks include creating a poster to hang above the group which represents their investment firm.
